Beginner Hiking Program (BHP) for Families, April - June 2018, Boston Area

Have you ever wanted to take your family for a hike? Not sure where to go, what to bring, or how to convince your kids it will be fun? Then join us for the new Beginner Hiking Program for Families! Registering your family for this program will give you access to kid-friendly, beginner through more advanced, hikes with other families. Hike locations will mainly be Metro Boston / Eastern MA with some options for NH and the White Mountains.
During the hikes leaders will share info about appropriate clothing and equipment, trail etiquette, and basic safety on the trail. Additionally, leaders will share family tips, tricks, and fun games to use with kids to motivate them and have fun in the woods!

Hikes will be categorized according to length and difficulty so that families can determine which hikes to participate in. This program is appropriate for all ages, although the more advanced hikes may not be appropriate for the youngest children.

Fee for the program is $20 per family and all registered families will receive a copy of the AMC book: Outdoors with Kids Boston: 100 Fun Places to Explore In and Around the City. Also, children who complete three or more hikes will earning a BHP Patch as recognition. Upon registration you will receive more details about the program.

Full Leader Training Program, Boston, MA

Family Date: Thu April 12, 2018 - Thu May 3, 2018

This program is for AMC members interested to organize and lead Boston Chapter trips and activities. Participation qualifies you to co-lead trips and activities for Family Outings and other committees and other Boston committees. The program consists of lectures, small group exercises and role-play scenarios spread over two evening sessions and one-weekend session, with a follow-on session to organize actual trips. Topics include trip planning and trip organization, safety, leadership styles, and group dynamics. The program emphasizes experiential learning and decision making skills. Open to all AMC members with preference given to active AMC trip participants. The two evening sessions are Thursday, April 12 and Thursday, April 19 from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm at AMC Headquarters in Charlestown, MA. The weekend session is April 27- 29 (beginning 7 pm Friday and ending by 4 pm on Sunday) at Camp Lyndon, Sandwich, MA. You must attend all sessions to complete the program. The optional (but highly encouraged) follow-on session to organize trips is Thursday, May 3 at AMC Headquarters. Program size is limited. Family Model Train Hike in Needham Town Forest, MA (BHP LEVEL 1)

Finish out the April school vacation week with some outdoor fun! Join us Friday April 20th at 10:30 am for an easy 2 mile hike through Needham Town Forest. We will hike through the forest searching for a scale model train, built over ten years ago by a local hiker and model builder.

Family Hike to Medford Brooks Estate, MA (BHP Level 1)

Join us for a leisurely roughly 3 hour stroll along the trails of this fifty-acre, nineteenth century estate. See the exteriors of the Shepherd Brooks Manor and Carriage house, the man-made pond, the Brooks family burial plot and the old girl scout cabin. The trails are not smooth, but can be navigated by jogging strollers. We will discuss the history of the Brooks family and getting children outdoors safely on adventures they will enjoy.

Family Hike: LetterBoxing, Boxborough (BHP Level 1)

Eyes on Owls! Live Owl Program! Bedford, MA

Field naturalist Marcia Wilson and wildlife photojournalist Mark Wilson display six lively owls separately and walk them around the audience for close-views, photos, and questions. The live owl program will be preceded with a short narrative slide presentation and a rousing "hooting lesson" with audience participation. Great for the young and young at heart (recommended ages 5 - 99+). Mark and Marcia Wilson will share the field marks, signs, and naturalist's skills that you can use to find wild owls without disturbing them, while introducing you to six live owls up close! Family Outings Committee Meeting and Trip Planning, Newton, MA

Join Family Outings Monday evening April 30th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the Auburndale Library in Newton for our Family Outings Committee and Trip Planning Meeting. Light refreshments. Public meeting open to all. Great opportunity to get to know the group and see how volunteer-led AMC Family Outings are governed and trips are planned. The Boston Chapter's Family Outings Committee meets four times per year to discuss and plan. We have roughly 75+ active volunteers.

6:30 to 7:30 pm we discuss committee business and larger training and events coming up. This is followed by a general trip planning meeting. Bring your ideas to brainstorm. Teens welcome to join. Younger kids welcome but they will need to be able to entertain themselves quietly. Our meeting and trip planning agenda is more for adults.

Hiking the Bay Circuit Trail (BCT), A Multimedia Presentation - Lancaster, MA

Always wanted to know about the Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway, conceived in 1929 as an "Outer Emerald Necklace" between I-495 and 128 mirroring Boston's famed Olmsted-designed "Emerald Necklace"? Join AMC Family Outings Wednesday evening May 2nd from 6:30 - 8 pm at Thayer Memorial Library in Lancaster, MA for a Multimedia Presentation "Hiking the Bay Circuit Trail: A Video Journal".

Dan & Marilyn Brielmann along with Alan French will be your guides taking you along the Bay Circuit Trail, a 200 mile natural wonder that arcs the city of Boston from Newburyport to Kingston. Dan and Marilyn, professional videographers, incorporate their video and musical talents in this documentary. Alan French, Founder and Chairman and Executive Director Emeritus of the Bay Circuit Alliance Inc. (BCA) joins to talk about the more than 25 years he was involved with this project and making it a reality. "Long Live The Bay Circuit"!

Alan turned over the leadership of the Bay Circuit Trail (BCT) in 2012 to The Trustees of Reservations and the AMC and Kristen Sykes as lead organization. AMC is gap filling the few remaining missing trail links and provides trail stewardship. Family Friendly Wilderness First Aid Training, Concord, MA

This Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course will help you prepare for the unexpected. This fast-paced, hands-on training is designed to meet the needs of trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts and individuals working in remote locations. It will introduce you to caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. At the end of the course, you'll have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations. This class will be held at the Thoreau Outing Club, 235 Forest Ridge Rd, Concord MA (http://www.thoreau.com/). Course fee of $130 will be reimbursed if you lead or assist for Boston Family Outings twice in a 12 month period. Thoreau Club is also putting together a kids camp as a great option for kids while parents are training. The camp will include a short hike, lunch over the campfire, treehouse, arts & crafts, games, etc. The cost of the camp will be signficantly discounted to parents taking WFA. AMC Thoreau "Kid Camp", Concord, MA

Calling all kids ages 5+ for weekend fun "Kid Camp" with Swimming (indoor), Tennis, Arts & Crafts, a hike, tree house and swings and slide play structure, cook over the campfire lunch, fruit available throughout the day, who could ask for anything more? Groton Town Forest Family Hike, Groton, MA

Kettles, Cones, Canes, and Eskers. Explore Groton Town Forest on mildly steep trails in a short loop hike suitable for families on Saturday May 5 at 9 am. We will see birds, wildflowers, turtles, snakes, and tadpoles. Meet at the Groton Senior Centerparking lot at 8:50 am, return after about 2 miles at 11 am. Kids Intro to Fishing trip, Medfield, MA (BHP Level 1)

Kids Learn to Fish class. Come join us 8 am to 12 pm as we teach kids ages 6 and up to learn the basics about bait fishing. We cover topics such as reading water, bait, lures, bobbers. We meet at Rocky Woods in Medfield, MA by 8am. We have access to a number of ponds and you don't need a fishing license.

Since we have a limited number of rods, we will restrict this to 10 kids plus parent(s). Remember to bring water, snacks and/or lunch.

AMC Family Outings supplies rods/bait/hooks. There is an entry/parking fee if you are not a member of the Trustees of the Reservations. There is also a fee of $5 per child to cover bait/line etc payable on site.

Family Bay Circuit Trail (BCT) Hike -- Nashoba Brook & N Acton Conservation Area, Acton, MA (BHP Level 2)

We will meet at noon and hike about 5 miles with some gentle ups and downs and interesting historic sites along the trail. We will hike on a section of the Bay Circuit Trail (BCT) overlying Trail Through Time (TTT) at Nashoba Brook and adjacent trails in North Acton Conservation Area. We will also cross a Bruce Freeman Rail Trail (BFT) section which opens this spring.

We will park at Robbins Mill Community Playground and continue to Robbins Mill Conservation Land, and then to "Wheeler Farm" foundation site and follow Nashoba Brook Trail and Brook downstream/ southward by Native American "Stone Chamber" and the historic "Pencil Factory" site and return northward via "Pest House" foundation site to Robbins Mill Conservation Land and then back to the Robbins Mill Community Playground. Side trip possible to Spring Hill Conservation Land, depending on the group's capability and interest.

"The Bay Circuit trail - sometimes named "Bay Secret" trail - is a brilliant idea conceived in 1929 as an 'outer emerald necklace' connecting green gems surrounding Boston. Today it is a 230 mile thru-hike!"

The Birds Are Back Family Walk, Lancaster Town Forest, Lancaster, MA (BHP Level 1)

Audubon Certified Birder and North County Land Trust Board Member Clay Hobart shares the wonders of spring birds. This is an early morning walk from 7 - 9 am. We will take our time enjoying the birds and walking perhaps a mile or two at most. In particular, Clay will share what he sees for birds 16 - 17 months post harvest compared to pre-harvest in the Lancaster Town Forest. Tim Castner, Chair Lancaster Town Forest, will be there as well. This will be fascinating. Lancaster had a carefully planned harvest in the town forest ..... designed to improve the health of the trees and wildlife in the area. Let's see what has happened since.

Please be sure to dress for the weather. Early April early morning can be cool. Suggest layers! Suggest boots as well. Sneakers may get wet and be uncomfortable. Snacks for the kids and water always a good thing.

Family Hike at Breakheart Reservation, Wakefield/Saugus, followed by ice cream (BHP Level 1)

Come join families 9:45 AM Saturday May 12th on an easy 1..5 - 2 mile hike (1 - 2 hours) around Breakheart Reservation in Wakefield/ Saugus. The hike is on wide gravel road and woodsy trails with two small hills that offer a reward with views towards Boston and the ocean. Perfect hike for littler ones! Optional ice cream (parent's expense) at Jordan's post-hike.

Hike to start near guard house of the Northeast Vocational High School parking lot off Hemlock Rd, off Farm St., off Water St.(Rt. 129). Option if raining to meet at Christopher Dunne Visitor Center off the Lynn Fells Parkway, view stuffed local animals, and share future potential Breakheart hikes and other opportunities (swimming, fishing, etc.)

Family Mother's Day Shapleigh Bunkhouse Overnight in Crawford Notch, NH

A weekend of spring hiking in beautiful Crawford Notch. Saturday we will hike Mt. Willard (3.2 miles) gorgeous views into Crawford Notch. Saturday night we will stay at Shapleigh Bunkhouse next to AMC Highland Center. The bunkhouse sleeps 16, is coed, heated, has bathrooms/showers and a common area. Saturday night we will make a simple pizza dinner with option to enjoy Highland Center evening program. Sunday breakfast will be at the Highland Center followed by leader's choice hike. Sunday options will depend on the groups abilities and conditions. Hike could be into Arethusa Falls, Elephants Head or into the Flume Gorge.

Participants must have some previous hiking experience, but not necessarily in the White Mountains. In mid May we expect beautiful spring conditions. Family Hike to Wachusett Mtn, Princeton, MA (BHP Level 2)

Celebrate Mothers' Day and join other families for a leisurely hike to the summit of Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, MA! The hike is approximately 3 miles with roughly 800ft elevation gain. On a clear day, the 360-degree views from the summit and summit tower are lovely! Often known as a downhill ski destination, Wachusett Mtn is located within the 3000-acre Wachusett State Reservation, home to 17 miles of hiking and walking trails (we will only cover about 3 miles, though!). Pack a lunch and join us for a beautiful spring hike!

Family Cardigan High Cabin Overnight, Alexandria, NH (BHP Level 3)

Family Date: Sat May 19, 2018 - Sun May 20, 2018

Join a small group of AMC Families at Cardigan High Cabin for the night. Hike in two miles with 1450' elevation gain. The cabin is just under half mile from the summit of Mt. Cardigan (3,155') w/great views. Spring hiking is awesome with cool temperatures and views unobstructed by leaves.

High Cabin was built in 1931 and renovated in 2004 with new bunk beds, roof, woodstove and Clivus composting toilet. The cabin sleeps 12 and is cozy. We will carry our sleeping bags and some group gear. Best for kids 6+. Cost is $50/adult and $40/kid including lodging, dinner, breakfast.

Peaks and Pianos for Families, Ashburnham, MA

Family Date: Sat May 19, 2018

For families with kids 10 years and older. Moderate hike up Mount Watatic followed by a break for lunch, then a special tour of the Frederick Historic Piano Collection. 3-mile loop hike is approximately 3 hours, 600' elevation gain with beautiful views at the summit. Piano tour is 1.5-2 hours. Hiking boots required. Bring personal water, snacks, rain gear, hat, and a love of learning. Prepare a piece to play on an historic piano if you can.
