Family Calumet Junior (kids 8 & under) Winter Weekend in West Ossipee, NH

Join AMC Family Outings for a fun relaxed Winter Weekend roughly 2 ½ hours north of Boston at Calumet lodge & cabins. This trip is targeted to families with younger children, 8 & under, but kids all ages are welcome AMC members and non-members alike. On the edge of Lake Ossipee, Calumet offers hiking, snowshoeing, tubing, ice skating, and x-c skiing at our doorstep, and optional DH skiing nearby. Adults relax while kids build snowmen and snow angels and play outdoor basketball and broom ball at the covered pavillion. This weekend includes accommodations, all meals, activities, & down time for kids & adults. Saturday evening, there is a campfire w/singing & stories on the beach.

Accommodations are rustic comfortable. The lodge has a lounge, kitchen, bathrooms with showers on the first floor which is where the group shares our meals and down time. The 2nd floor sleeps up to 22 (three bedrooms for 2, 8, and 12) in bunk-style firm beds. The sleeping areas are co-ed, so families can stay together. Bring your sleeping bags or sheets and blankets, pillow and towels. The cabins are insulated and heated and sleep up to ten (four bunk beds and two single beds). Those staying in the cabins have their choice of the bathrooms in the lodge or separate heated bathrooms. Group meals are simple, hearty, and delicious. Everyone helps cook, prep and clean-up.

Family Ski Weekend at Pinestead Farm Lodge in Franconia, NH

Family ski weekend based at the comfortable but rustic Pinestead Farm Lodge in Franconia, NH. We have several simple "suites" of rooms with shared bath and kitchen facilities. Breakfast and dinner are group events at the lodge. Lunch materials are provided. Pinestead is 10 minutes from Cannon Mountain and 5 minutes from the XC ski trails at the Franconia Inn. Bretton Woods Alpine and XC areas are about 45 minutes away. There's a sledding hill right behind the lodge (may need some "engineering") and another one at the nearby Franconia Inn where ice skating (for a fee) may also be possible. Group hikes to Bridal Veil Falls sometimes happen. Suitable for kids all ages and skill levels. Family President's Day Weekend at AMC's Noble View Outdoor Center in the Pioneer Valley, about 1-1/2 hours west of Boston. Activities include hiking, snow shoeing, x-c skiing, and family 'snow fun' like sledding or making snow people! The accommodations are rustic, but comfortable and cozy, heated by wood stoves. The twin beds have mattresses, but we bring pillows, sheets, and blankets or sleeping bags. We need to be flexible regarding sleeping arrangements which may be co-ed to keep families together and some kids will be in sleeping bags on the floor. A full bath house with hot showers are within a short walk from the cabin. Family Feb. Vacation 3-Day Getaway, Noble View, Russell, MA

Enjoy winter hiking, snow shoeing & sledding, then warm up next to the wood burning stove with home cooked meals, friendly smiles and other families enjoying snacks, games or crafts. If you have x-c ski's...bring them! Typically, others do, too!

Noble View is known for well marked trails & beautiful vistas overlooking the Pioneer Valley. The trails are easy for families of all ages whether hiking, on shoe shoes or x-c skis. Families with kids of all ages are welcome! We have snow shoes you can borrow (let us know) and/or you may bring your own outdoor equipment and indoor games to play/share with others. Russell Pond may be frozen enough for ice skating, too! We'll have to see... "Snow much to do!!!"...

The Double Cottage at Noble View is rustic and cozy warm with the wood burning stove, but with no running water (that's at the Bath House!). Everyone gets to share the responsibilities for meal prep in the well-stocked kitchen, and clean-up. The Bath House is a short walk away and features running hot & cold water, hot showers and eco-friendly, flush toilets.

Sleeping accommodations are co-ed to try to keep families together in private rooms (no promises). Bed numbers vary per room, so bring along an air mattress for the kids to use on the floor. Don't forget your sleeping bags and pillows! Bedding is not supplied.

If you like downhill skiing, there are a few areas close by you may want to explore on your own. (Lift tickets & equipment not included in fee).

$125/pp covers meals: 2 dinners (possibly 3 depending upon your arrival time) 3 breakfasts, lunch fixings and snacks throughout the day; lodging; use of Noble Views trails and facilities.

We will walk from the South end of Prospect Park along the ridge to the peak in the park. We'll have great views of downtown Boston and Waltham and enjoy this beautiful wooded area.

Family Zealand Falls Hut XC ski in/out Self Service Overnight, NH

Enjoy the splendor and serenity of Winter in the White Mountains as we ski to the Zealand Falls Hut for a family friendly self service overnight. We will ski at a leisurely pace enjoying good company and varied landscapes. The trail starts under tree cover, then opens up to beaver meadows and marshlands with open views of Mt. Tom.
We will ski the Spruce Goose cross country ski trail that begins at and parallels Zealand Rd at the junction of rt. 302. The road is closed in the winter. We will ski gently uphill for 4.1 miles to the Zealand trail. From there, we will continue along terrain that is mostly flat with minor ups and downs, gaining a total elevation of 450 ft. along 2.5 miles to the Twinway trail junction. The hut is reached with a short but moderately steep .2 miles gaining another 200 ft, which we will likely do on foot.
The self service hut has one care taker and provides access to the kitchen and utensils to cook our own meals. We carry in our own gear as well as group food and cook dinner and breakfast and clean up as a group. Accommodations included large shared bunk rooms with mattresses and pillows, but no blankets.
This is a good step up trip for the novice looking to advance their winter experience. Participants should have some previous cross country and winter day hiking experience. Proper equipment and appropriate winter gear and clothing are a must! The main hut area has a small wood stove that is lit at 4 pm, for the evening (but does not get lit in the morning for breakfast). BE WARNED, the bunk rooms are unheated and could be very cold. Winter sleeping bags (0 degree) are essential.

Family Winter Weekend at Sub Sig Cabin, Crawford Notch, NH

This is a half century old hidden jewel … in fact it is called Hart's location and the cabin ( Sub Sig) is rustic yet clean and functional with an outhouse ( yeah) and hauled in water. We will plan a hike/ cross country skiing choice both Saturday and Sunday as well as group breakfasts and a supper prepared by us all on Saturday evening. Always wanted to know about the Bay Circuit Trail and Greenway, conceived in 1929 as an "Outer Emerald Necklace" between I-495 and 128 mirroring Boston's famed Olmsted-designed "Emerald Necklace"? Join AMC Family Outings Wednesday evening May 2nd from 6:30 - 8 pm for a Multimedia Presentation "Hiking the Bay Circuit Trail: A Video Journal". Dan & Marilyn Brielmann along with Alan French will be your guides taking you along the Bay Circuit Trail, a 200 mile natural wonder that arcs the city of Boston from Newburyport to Kingston.

Dan and Marilyn, professional videographers, incorporate their video and musical talents in this documentary. Alan French, Founder and Chairman and Executive Director Emeritus of the Bay Circuit Alliance Inc. (BCA) joins to talk about the more than 25 years he was involved with this project and making it a reality. "Long Live The Bay Circuit"!

Alan turned over the leadership of the Bay Circuit Trail (BCT) in 2012 to The Trustees of Reservations and the AMC and Kristen Sykes as lead organization. AMC is gap filling the few remaining missing trail links and provides trail stewardship. Family Friendly Wilderness First Aid Training, Concord, MA

This Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course will help you prepare for the unexpected. This fast-paced, hands-on training is designed to meet the needs of trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts and individuals working in remote locations. It will introduce you to caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. At the end of the course, you'll have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations. This class will be held at the Thoreau Outing Club, 235 Forest Ridge Rd, Concord MA (http://www.thoreau.com/). Course fee of $130 will be reimbursed if you lead or assist for Boston Family Outings twice in a 12 month period. Thoreau Club is also putting together a kids camp as a great option for kids while parents are training. The camp will include a short hike, lunch over the campfire, treehouse, arts & crafts, games, etc. The cost of the camp will be signficantly discounted to parents taking WFA. Family Mother's Day Shapleigh Bunkhouse Overnight in Crawford Notch, NH

A weekend of spring hiking in beautiful Crawford Notch. Saturday we will hike Mt. Willard (3.2 miles) gorgeous views into Crawford Notch. Saturday night we will stay at Shapleigh Bunkhouse next to AMC Highland Center. The bunkhouse sleeps 16, is coed, heated, has bathrooms/showers and a common area. Saturday night we will make a simple pizza dinner with option to enjoy Highland Center evening program. Sunday breakfast will be at the Highland Center followed by leader's choice hike. Sunday options will depend on the groups abilities and conditions. Hike could be into Arethusa Falls, Elephants Head or into the Flume Gorge.

Participants must have some previous hiking experience, but not necessarily in the White Mountains. In mid May we expect beautiful spring conditions. Space is limited to 16; registration is recommended as early as possible so you don't miss out! AMC Member Adults $80; kids age 12 and under $50. Non-member prices are respectively $90 and $60. Family Memorial Day Weekend Hiking, Shapleigh Bunkhouse, Crawford Notch, NH

Join other families for a weekend in beautiful Crawford Notch, NH! AMC Boston Family Outings has rented the Shapleigh Bunkhouse (next to the Highland Center) for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Activities will be designed to fit the age range and interests of the group but will likely include a hike up Mt. Willard (3.2 miles RT) with its gorgeous views down into Crawford Notch ….a classic "big bang for your buck" hike.

For Saturday night dinner and Saturday, Sunday and Monday breakfast, we will dine next door at the Highland Center, enjoying hearty, home-cooked meals. Sunday night's dinner will be prepared by the group, and lunch fixings will also be made available on Saturday and Sunday. We will stay at the 16-bed Shapleigh Bunkhouse which is coed, heated, and includes bathrooms/showers, linens, and a common area.

Space is limited to 16; registration is recommended as early as possible so you don't miss out! Prices are $220 per adult and $160 per child 12 and under. Cost includes 3 nights lodging and all meals from breakfast Saturday through breakfast Monday. Memorial Day Family Weekend Backpack to Galehead & Zealand Falls Huts, NH

Family Memorial Day Weekend Backpack to AMC Galehead Hut (3,800 feet) & Zealand Falls Hut (2,700 feet), both still self service. Hike three 4,000 footers in spring.

Visit two AMC favorites. Galehead Hut is the most remote of the AMC High Huts with glorious views of the Pemigawasset Wilderness Area. Zealand Falls Hut is spectacularly situated on the side of Zealand Valley near Zealand Falls at the northern end of the Pemigewasset wilderness.

Meet Saturday morning 10 am at the Gale River Trailhead to shuttle cars to our endpoint, the Zealand Trail trailhead. We will hike to the hut on The Gale River Trail (4.6 mi. 2200 ft, elevation gain 3 hrs 25 min.). After arriving at the hut we can hike up to the summit of South Twin Mtn. elev. 4,902 ft.(0.8 mi., 1,150ft.,1 hr.) &/or to Galehead Mtn summit elev. 4,024 ft.(0.5 mi., 250 ft., 25 min.). We will carry & cook our own food and prepare a group dinner & breakfast at the hut.

Sunday we hike The Twinway from Galehead Hut to Zealand Falls Hut (7 miles, 1,750 elevation gain, 4.25 hours). After the steep climb to the summit of South Twin Mtn. elev. 4,902 ft.(0.8 mi., 1,150ft.,1 hr.) the trail goes mostly downhill, with a minimal climb up to the summit of Guyot (4,580 feet), and a short but steep climb up to Zealand Mountain (4,265 feet). There are 360° views from the summits of South Twin and Guyot. Peakbaggers will get both South Twin and Zealand Mountain.

Monday, we hike out the Zealand Trail 2.8 miles with 650 feet elevation loss to our cars.

Family Lonesome Lake Hut Memorial Day Overnight, Franconia Notch, NH

Are you and your family ready for the fun and adventure of staying overnight at an AMC hut ... Overnight at the family-friendly Lonesome Lake hut, one of the most accessible in the Whites? We will hike 1.6 miles (and gain 1000' vertical feet) to the hut at a kid friendly pace. The route crosses 2 bridges and features a few mild rock scrambles, and the incline is moderated by switchbacks. Along the way, we will stop for snacks, look at nature and enjoy the views. Once at the hut, we have free time to explore, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Franconia Ridge across the pristine glacial lake, and relax. Come nightfall we might catch sunset. Sunday, we can take an optional 0.8 mile hike around the lake before returning to our cars. This is a great trip for families with children ages 5+ with some hiking experience. Lonesome Lake Hut is self-service this time of year. Accommodations include a bunk w/pillow (note - bunk rooms are co-ed). Participants help carry group gear and prepare group meals. Lodging, dinner, and breakfast included. Price $70/person. You are responsible for your lunch both days and trail snacks.
