Family AMC Carter Notch Hut Fall Overnight, White Mountains, NH

Family Date: Sat September 22, 2018 - Sun September 23, 2018

The AMC's Carter Notch Hut is the destination for this family adventure weekend. The Hut sits at the end of a moderate 3.8 mile hike in along the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. It is surrounded by the towering cliffs of Wildcat and Carter Dome on either side, and there is a small lake just below the Hut. The Carter Notch Hut, which was built in 1914, has a main lodge with two detached bunk houses. We will hike into the Hut at an easy pace, stopping along the way to explore and take pictures of the landscape. There are lots of boulders to climb too! After settling in those who wish to hike more can do part of the Carter Dome trail, or hike up some of the switchbacks going up to Wildcat. Otherwise you and your family can relax with a book, play games, or go swimming in the lake if the weather permits. We will enjoy a group dinner, prepared by participants and leaders, and then more games and storytelling at night. Sunday, after a pancake breakfast, we will hike back to our cars. You and your children must be able to hike 3.8 miles along rocky terrain with your own personal gear, sleeping bags and group food. The elevation is gain is moderate - 2,050ft over 3.8 miles, with some steeper sections.

Cost is $75/members and $85 non-members and includes lodging at Carter Notch Hut Saturday night, one dinner and one breakfast. Participants are responsible for their own snacks and lunches.

Family Date: Sat November 24, 2018 - Sun November 25, 2018

Enjoy turkey w/cranberry sauce and pecan pie with a small group of families at AMC Lonesome Lake Hut the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This is a great trip for families with some experience hiking! We hike 1.6 miles, (950 ' elevation gain) to the hut at a kid-friendly pace. Late fall hiking is awesome with views unobstructed by leaves, cool temperatures, and no bugs. We carry our sleeping bags, lunches and snacks, water and mountain gear. The group carries in supplies for dinner and breakfast and prepares it together in the hut kitchen. We have free time at the hut to explore, enjoy the breathtaking views of Franconia Ridge across the pristine glacial lake, and relax. Sunday is an optional hike 0.8 miles around the lake before returning to our cars.

Lonesome Lake Hut is second newest and southernmost hut of AMC's 8 huts, built in 1964. The main building is the dining room and kitchen while 46 guests sleep in separate bunkhouses. The dining room is toasty warm with a fire going in the evening, though the bunk rooms are unheated. Bunk rooms are co-ed in order that we can keep families together.

This trip is best for ages 5+. Participants help carry group gear and prepare group meals. Price $70/person ($80 for non-members) includes lodging, dinner, and breakfast. You are responsible for your lunch both days and trail snacks.
