Mt Washington Alpine Gardens

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat June 23, 2018

Join us for a naturalist-friendly hike up to the Alpine Gardens on Mount Washington's east face. This trail runs 1,000 below the summit and passes through some of the best wildflower gardens in the northeast, and includes some rare flower species indigenous to this area alone. We will start in Pinkham Notch and tackle a difficult climb to the Alpine Gardens Trail. Here, we will enjoy great views, and pass by the upper reaches of both Huntington and Tuckerman's ravines, where someone will say "People SKI that?" with both disbelief and reverence. This hike is more for casual observers of nature than peak-baggers! Bring your flower ID books, and be prepared to take time for photos and a leisurely lunchtime in the gardens. It is also for more experienced hikers, since both the ascent and descent will be quite difficult in places, and will have you wondering if you did, in fact, pack Advil. Attendees must be comfortable with unstable footing, steep trails and exposed conditions. Extreme weather or threat of thunderstorms will cancel, or re-route. Details to be provided to approved attendees in advance.

Couch-to-4k Young Members (20s & 30s) (June 17 - August 26)

Young Members Date: Sun June 24, 2018

Couch to 4k is a series of hikes intended to introduce participants to the basic skills and knowledge required for safe and fun outdoor experiences. Hikes are organized into three levels of difficulty, starting with local walks with little elevation gain and culminating in treks up four-thousand-footers of New Hampshire.

Couch to 4k trip leaders will highlight important skills for safe hiking such navigation, hydration, nutrition, and proper attire. Most Couch to 4k events are on the weekends, but look out for weekday night local hikes as well.

Sign up for as many (or as few) hikes as you would like, building from Level 1 hikes all the way to Level 3, or as far along as you would like to go.

Be sure to review trip descriptions to see which hikes are right for you. Here's a rough guide to how the Couch to 4K hikes are leveled:

Level 1 hikes include little to no elevation gain, and move at a moderate pace. These hikes are great opportunities to get to know your leaders and fellow participants and to review some basic skills for hiking.

Level 2 hikes are on the longer side, around 5 miles, and include some elevation gain with rock scrambling and ledges. At this level and above all participants are expected to have appropriate footwear, clothing, water, and other essential gear.

Level 3 hikes are 4ks! These hikes include some of the shorter 4ks with lower elevation gain. Expect rock scrambling, ledges, and stream crossings.

The intended audience of the Couch to 4k program is young members (YM - hikers in their 20s and 30s), but all are welcome.

Annual Presidential traverse

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat June 30, 2018

Join us for a hyper-scenic single-day odyssey over the challenging terrain of NH's iconic Presidential Range! We will hike in two teams. A southbound team will follow the classic route from the Appalachia trailhead in Randolph, NH to the Crawford Path trailhead in Bretton Woods. The route includes 10 peaks (Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Clay, Washington, Monroe, South Monroe, Franklin, Eisenhower, Pierce), 7 of which are official 4000 footers. Stats: 20 miles and 8600 feet of cumulative elevation gain at a moderate pace (1.5+ mph). For an additional 2 miles and 400 feet of elevation gain, there will be the option of including Mt. Jackson, an 8th official 4000 footer.

Concurrently, a northbound team will hike from the AT crossing south of Crawford Notch, up to Appalachia. This route includes 12 peaks (those named above in reverse order, plus Mt. Webster), 8 of which are official 4000 footers. Stats: 24 miles and 9300 feet of cumulative elevation gain at a fast pace (2+ mph). Paths will cross and car keys will change hands on Mt. Washington.

Because of a very early start and late finish, we will offer group lodging options for the nights before and after.

Due to the hike's size and complexity, TEAMWORK in the form of mutual respect and support, positive attitude, flexibility and bonding is especially key. We also need to be similarly considerate of hut croo, Mt. Washington Visitor Center staff, and other hikers we encounter. As the last example on our timeline of being there for each other, we have a strong tradition of not heading home after the hike until all of us have safely gotten back to our cars, re-grouped and debriefed, possibly as late as 11 pm. If these considerations will not work for you, please do not register.

PROFILE DATA: If you're registering for this trip, please make sure that your profile here in REGI (especially the Experience and Exercise sections) is up to date (click "My Profile" above), with special emphasis and detail on the most recent 3 months. Please also include your hiking/exercise plans for the weeks leading into the Traverse. Without this information, we will not be able to determine the degree to which the trip matches your capabilities and needs and will therefore not be able to approve your registration.
