AMC Boston 2018 Spring Hiking Program

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Tue April 10, 2018 - Tue May 8, 2018

Tuesdays, April 10, 17, 24, May 1st, and 8th. Ever wanted to try hiking or backpacking and didn't know where to get started? Are you rusty and want to brush up on your knowledge and skills? Do you want to get involved with our organized hikes and meet other hikers? Then the 3-Season Spring Hiking Program (SHP) is for you! This interactive course consists of 5 instructional sessions to introduce the basics of spring, summer and fall day hiking and backpacking in New England. The instruction topics for each of the 5 evenings are different and include: clothing, footwear, heat management, nutrition, essential gear, backcountry stewardship and more! During the program participants are also given a choice of day hikes, lodge based trips and backpacks that are exclusive to the program to practice their new skills. These trips are an opportunity for participants to get outside with experienced AMC leaders and practice what they have learned in the classroom sessions. Though many of these trips have a particular mountain as an objective, the emphasis is on learning and reinforcement of the classroom discussions. Additional charges apply to some trips. [Unfortunately we cannot accommodate dogs, except service dogs, on any program trip.]
Program participants will get the most out of the program by going on as many trips as possible. Day hikes and weekend events will be offered starting the first Saturday after the program begins and run through the summer. The Cardigan Lodge Weekend (May 18-20) and the Beginner Backpacking Trip (June 1-3) are capstone trips for this program. Mark your calendars to attend either of these fun filled weekends! Individual trip registration will open after the first classroom session on April 10th. Advanced registration for the program is required. Reserve your spot now as the class fills quickly. The SHP takes place on 5 nights from 6:30-8:30pm at the First Baptist Church of Medford, 29 Oakland Street, Medford, MA. The dates are Tuesdays April 10th, April 17th, April 24th, May 1st and May 8th. Class sessions are located close to I-93 and municipal parking in Medford, as well as the 94, 95, 96, 101, 134 and 326 (express) MBTA bus lines. If you have general questions about our SHP program, please contact the program organizer, Casey Ajalat. With questions about registration, please contact SHP registrar, Chris McCarron. Springtime Hike to the Hancocks

Forty Plus Date: Sun April 22, 2018

Join us on a midspring hike to Mt. Hancock and South Hancock. This will be a fairly strenuous 9.8 mile hike with about 2900' elevation gain. We will begin on the Hancock Notch Trail off the Kancamagus Highway. When we reach the Cedar Brook Trail, we will proceed north over several brook crossings. The real fun begins on the Hancock Loop Trail, which involves a very steep incline over about 0.5 mile to the first summit, a beautiful traverse over to the second peak, and then 0.5 miles down a steep decline. We will maintain a moderate pace of about 1.5 miles per hour. Both peaks have beautiful views if the weather cooperates. Due to the unpredictability of the weather this time of year, some winter hiking experience is required. Winter gear may be necessary, including snowshoes, microspikes, and possibly crampons.

Middlesex Fells

Young Members Date: Sun April 22, 2018

Celebrate the arrival of reliable (?) good weather with Mike and Marker the beagle with a short but strenuous hike along the Skyline Trail in the Middlesex Fells Reservation. We will meet at the Sheepfold parking area, at the far western edge of the upper lot (by the sign posts) and proceed down the Skyline trail where short rocky scrambles lead to excellent views of Boston and the surrounding area, culminating at Wright's Tower at the park's southern edge. We will loop around and follow the reservoir back to the parking area. The hike is relatively short (3-4) miles and should take about 2-3 hours. Appropriate for most fitness levels but there are some short uphill scrambles. Be sure to bring water and wear clothing you can move around in (especially shoes, nothing open toed, there will be rocks and possible mud).

Forty Plus Date: Wed April 25, 2018

Join the Wednesday Wramblers as we head north of Boston to explore the Middlesex Fells. We will hike the 5.2 mile Reservoir Trail which encircles three reservoirs. Open water can be seen from many points on the trail, which is rated as moderate. We will keep a leisurely pace of 1.5 mph. Bring snacks, water, and lunch. Heavy rains or any other extremes of Mother Nature cancels the hike. If the trails are icy or snow-packed (hopefully we will be done with winter by then) traction devices will be required and hiking poles are recommended.

Wednesday Wrambler activities are part of 40 Plus's new Let's Get Out There! local hikes, where the pace ranges from easy through moderate to faster. Show & Go Conditioning Hike Series in Middlesex Fells

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Thu April 26, 2018

Need to break in some new boots or other gear? Has it been a while since you had a pack on your back? Want to see where your fitness level is at going into Spring/Summer hiking?

Join the leaders for this conditioning hike series in Middlesex Fells. Meet at the eastern edge of the Cross Fells Trail (Gate 58) at 6PM (directions below). We'll hike variations of the Rock Circuit and surrounding trails in the eastern section of the Fells. We'll plan to hike until dark (bring a headlamp) at a moderate pace to get our heart rates up.

Never explored the eastern part of the Fells? It boasts a waterfall (yes a waterfall in the Fells), nice up-and-down rock scrambles for stretching legs and testing boot grip, fantastic views of Boston, and the remains of the 1899 MIT Geodetic Observatory. It's a hidden gem with variable terrain accessible by public transit.

These are 'show and go' hikes that do not require registration. That said, help us manage hike size expectations and register for the hike if you can. This is part of a 5-hike series (Thurs April 26, Weds May 2, Thurs May 10, Thurs May 17, Thurs May 24). Show up for one or multiple hikes in the series. Your choice.

You will be asked to sign an AMC Waiver at the start of the hike. You can preview the waiver at: https://www.outdoors.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Volunteer-Led-Activi...

Gear: At a minimum, bring a pack that can fit an extra layer, hat & gloves (it'll get chillier as the sun sets), headlamp (required as we'll be chasing the sun out of the Fells), hiking boots, water and snacks. We'll hike rain or shine, so don't forget your rain gear. Better to test your rain gear locally than wait for a storm in the Whites. You may choose to carry a larger/heavier pack with your full gear for a spring/summer hike for a more rigorous workout. Packs can easily be made heavier with extra water. Mt Jefferson via Castle Trail

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat April 28, 2018

Join us for this early spring hike to the 5,716 foot summit of Mt. Jefferson by the Castle Trail. We will hike at a moderate pace, ascend 4,300 feet and cover 10 miles round trip in about 8 hours. The trail above treeline is rocky and somewhat steep including the Castles which are a series of rock towers that we will scramble around or over as we hike the ridge. Views from the trail are stunning. If you have above treeline experience and like a bit of a scramble, this is a great opportunity to end your winter hibernation and get back into the mountains. Since weather in late April is a gamble, come prepared with microspikes, rain gear, and warm clothing.
