Couch-to-4k Young Members (20s & 30s) (June 17 - August 26)

Young Members Date: Sun July 29, 2018

Couch to 4k is a series of hikes intended to introduce participants to the basic skills and knowledge required for safe and fun outdoor experiences. Hikes are organized into three levels of difficulty, starting with local walks with little elevation gain and culminating in treks up four-thousand-footers of New Hampshire.

Couch to 4k trip leaders will highlight important skills for safe hiking such navigation, hydration, nutrition, and proper attire. Most Couch to 4k events are on the weekends, but look out for weekday night local hikes as well.

Sign up for as many (or as few) hikes as you would like, building from Level 1 hikes all the way to Level 3, or as far along as you would like to go.

Be sure to review trip descriptions to see which hikes are right for you. Here's a rough guide to how the Couch to 4K hikes are leveled:

Level 1 hikes include little to no elevation gain, and move at a moderate pace. These hikes are great opportunities to get to know your leaders and fellow participants and to review some basic skills for hiking.

Level 2 hikes are on the longer side, around 5 miles, and include some elevation gain with rock scrambling and ledges. At this level and above all participants are expected to have appropriate footwear, clothing, water, and other essential gear.

Level 3 hikes are 4ks! These hikes include some of the shorter 4ks with lower elevation gain. Expect rock scrambling, ledges, and stream crossings.

The intended audience of the Couch to 4k program is young members (YM - hikers in their 20s and 30s), but all are welcome.

Camping Weekend with Northern Presidents (Madison, Adams) with Boston YM

Young Members Date: Fri August 3, 2018 - Sun August 5, 2018

Looking to hike a few Presidentials this summer but don't want to do a full traverse in a day? Craving some camping time? Join AMC Boston young members for a weekend of camping and hiking through some of the highest peaks in New Hampshire.
We have two nights booked at a campground in the Crawford Notch region, gathering on Friday night for campfire snacks (dinner will not be provided the first night).
Saturday we will hike to Mt. Madison and Adams in a 8.5-mile loop, approx. 4,206 elevation gain, returning to the campground for a second night with dinner cooked over the campfire.
Sunday we will plan a shorter hike in the area, possibly to a waterfall to swim. Both hikes will be at a fun, leisurely pace with plenty of stops for photos, water breaks, and snacks, but be advised, this is a hike for Intermediate/ Advanced hikers with previous experience hiking in the White Mountains or similar terrain/ mileage/ elevation.
Cost for the trip is $45 for members, $50 for non-members, which includes Saturday dinner, and two breakfasts, snacks, campground fees and firewood. Participants should bring lunches for both days.
