Family AMC Lonesome Lake Hut Overnight, Franconia Notch, NH

Family Date: Sat November 3, 2018 - Sun November 4, 2018

This is a great trip for families with some experience hiking! We hike 1.6 miles, (950 ' elevation gain) to the hut at a kid-friendly pace. Late fall hiking is awesome with views unobstructed by leaves, cool temperatures, and no bugs. We carry our sleeping bags, lunches and snacks, water and mountain gear. The group carries in supplies for dinner and breakfast and prepares it together in the hut kitchen. We have free time at the hut to explore, enjoy the breathtaking views of Franconia Ridge across the pristine glacial lake, and relax. Sunday is an optional hike 0.8 miles around the lake before returning to our cars.

Lonesome Lake Hut is second newest and southernmost hut of AMC's 8 huts, built in 1964. The main building is the dining room and kitchen while 46 guests sleep in separate bunkhouses. The dining room is toasty warm with a fire going in the evening, though the bunk rooms are unheated. Bunk rooms are co-ed in order that we can keep families together.

This trip is best for ages 5+. Participants help carry group gear and prepare group meals. Price $70/person ($80 for non-members) includes lodging, dinner, and breakfast. You are responsible for your lunch both days and trail snacks.

Family Walk on Deer Island, Winthrop, MA

Family Date: Sun November 4, 2018

Deer Island is a wonderful urban sanctuary. Awesome Boston and ocean views. Great walking, jogging, sightseeing, picnicking, fishing, and dog walking (dogs must be on a leash and owners need to clean up after their pets). There is a 2.6-mile perimeter pathway and another 2 miles of trails on the hills of the island.

We will walk 3 miles approx with dramatic views of the Boston skyline and Harbor Islands and a possibility to see spectacular closeups of airplane landings and takeoffs. Binoculars and drinks are recommended. We can use strollers and other child paraphernalia, but do bring warm clothing and wind and rain wear.

Two-thirds of the island's 185 upland acres are taken up by the Deer Island Waste Water Treatment Plant, protecting against the daily onslaught of sewage that had once contaminated waters and fouled beaches. Sixty acres of park land surround the treatment plant.

Deer Island is committed to Renewable Energy through the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) wastewater treatment plant. This facility, the second largest in the United States, uses the same amount of electricity as more than 2,000 homes each year. Using a hydroturbine, however, the facility produces 10 percent of its electricity from renewable energy.

The parking is at the parking lot on deer island. Deer Island is also accessible via the MBTA 712 Bus which connects to the Blue Line at Orient Heights.

Skiing Date: Thu November 8, 2018

Winter Is Coming ... Get Psyched! Catch up with others, make new friends, and make plans for the ski season ahead. Let's celebrate the coming of winter by toasting Ullr, the Norse god of snow, and implore him to blanket us with a snow-filled season. Night Shift Brewing is one of the premier craft brewers in the Boston metro area, with a wide variety of beers to fit any palate. Non-alcoholic beverages are also for sale, so don't be shy. Come meet and network with other skiers and find out about great places to ski and other info to make the upcoming ski season rewarding. We will provide a few snacks, but this taproom has a BYOF policy -- you can bring your own food or buy from the snacks they have for sale. There are often food trucks right outside the door (their website calendar gives you a head's up on food truck availability). The taproom is located near the Orange Line Wellington T stop, and has a parking lot and on-street parking available. Be there or be L-7, y'hear?
