Middlesex Fells Hike

Forty Plus Date: Wed April 25, 2018

Join the Wednesday Wramblers as we head north of Boston to explore the Middlesex Fells. We will hike the 5.2 mile Reservoir Trail which encircles three reservoirs. Open water can be seen from many points on the trail, which is rated as moderate. We will keep a leisurely pace of 1.5 mph. Bring snacks, water, and lunch. Heavy rains or any other extremes of Mother Nature cancels the hike. If the trails are icy or snow-packed (hopefully we will be done with winter by then) traction devices will be required and hiking poles are recommended.

Wednesday Wrambler activities are part of 40 Plus's new Let's Get Out There! local hikes, where the pace ranges from easy through moderate to faster. Whether you're new to hiking, haven't hiked for awhile, or want to up your hiking level, you're bound to find something of interest in "Let's Get Out There!

Show & Go Conditioning Hike Series in Middlesex Fells

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Thu April 26, 2018

Need to break in some new boots or other gear? Has it been a while since you had a pack on your back? Want to see where your fitness level is at going into Spring/Summer hiking?

Join the leaders for this conditioning hike series in Middlesex Fells. Meet at the eastern edge of the Cross Fells Trail (Gate 58) at 6PM (directions below). We'll hike variations of the Rock Circuit and surrounding trails in the eastern section of the Fells. We'll plan to hike until dark (bring a headlamp) at a moderate pace to get our heart rates up.

Never explored the eastern part of the Fells? It boasts a waterfall (yes a waterfall in the Fells), nice up-and-down rock scrambles for stretching legs and testing boot grip, fantastic views of Boston, and the remains of the 1899 MIT Geodetic Observatory. It's a hidden gem with variable terrain accessible by public transit.

These are 'show and go' hikes that do not require registration. That said, help us manage hike size expectations and register for the hike if you can. This is part of a 5-hike series (Thurs April 26, Weds May 2, Thurs May 10, Thurs May 17, Thurs May 24). Show up for one or multiple hikes in the series. Your choice.

You will be asked to sign an AMC Waiver at the start of the hike. You can preview the waiver at: https://www.outdoors.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Volunteer-Led-Activi...

Gear: At a minimum, bring a pack that can fit an extra layer, hat & gloves (it'll get chillier as the sun sets), headlamp (required as we'll be chasing the sun out of the Fells), hiking boots, water and snacks. We'll hike rain or shine, so don't forget your rain gear. Better to test your rain gear locally than wait for a storm in the Whites. You may choose to carry a larger/heavier pack with your full gear for a spring/summer hike for a more rigorous workout. Packs can easily be made heavier with extra water. Here's the recommended Spring Dayhike gear list: http://hbbostonamc.org/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf

Mt Jefferson via Castle Trail

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat April 28, 2018

Join us for this early spring hike to the 5,716 foot summit of Mt. Jefferson by the Castle Trail. We will hike at a moderate pace, ascend 4,300 feet and cover 10 miles round trip in about 8 hours. The trail above treeline is rocky and somewhat steep including the Castles which are a series of rock towers that we will scramble around or over as we hike the ridge. Views from the trail are stunning. If you have above treeline experience and like a bit of a scramble, this is a great opportunity to end your winter hibernation and get back into the mountains. Since weather in late April is a gamble, come prepared with microspikes, rain gear, and warm clothing.
