Show & Go Conditioning Hike Series in Middlesex Fells

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Thu May 10, 2018

Need to break in some new boots or other gear? Been a while since you had a pack on your back? Want to see where your fitness level is at going into Spring/Summer hiking?

Join the leaders for this conditioning hike series in Middlesex Fells. Meet at the eastern edge of the Cross Fells Trail (Gate 58) at 6PM (directions below). We'll hike variations of the Rock Circuit and surrounding trails in the eastern section of the Fells. We'll plan to hike until dark (bring a headlamp) at a moderate pace to get our heart rates up.

Never explored the eastern part of the Fells? It boasts a waterfall (yes a waterfall in the Fells), nice up-and-down rock scrambles for stretching legs and testing boot grip, fantastic views of Boston, and the remains of the 1899 MIT Geodetic Observatory. It's a hidden gem with variable terrain accessible by public transit.

These are show and go hikes that do not require registration. That said, help us manage hike size expectations and register for the hike if you can. Register here: https://regi.amcboston.org/event/1894

This is part of a 5-hike series (5 Thursdays, April 26, May 3, May10, May 17, May 24). Show up for one or multiple Thursdays. Your choice.

You will be asked to sign an AMC Waiver at the start of the hike. You can preview the waiver at: https://www.outdoors.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Volunteer-Led-Activi...

Gear:
At a minimum, bring a pack that can fit an extra layer, hat & gloves (it'll get chillier as the sun sets), headlamp (required as we'll be chasing the sun out of the Fells), hiking boots, water and snacks. We'll hike rain or shine, so don't forget your rain gear. Better to test your rain gear locally than wait for a storm in the Whites. You may choose to carry a larger/heavier pack with your full gear for a spring/summer hike for a more rigorous workout. Packs can easily be made heavier with extra water. Here's the recommended Spring Dayhike gear list: http://hbbostonamc.org/docs/Gear_lists/Spring_Dayhike_gear_list.pdf

This one-day program is for AMC members who are interested in organizing and leading Boston Chapter trips and activities with the Family Outings, Forty Plus, INTRO, Local Walks, Mountains and Music, Ski and Young Members committees. Participation in the program prepares you to co-lead non-backcountry trips and activities. (To co-lead backcountry trips or trips with other activity committees, see the longer leadership training program that involves two weeknights and a weekend, which is described here: https://regi.amcboston.org/event/1824) This program consists of lectures, small group exercises and role-plays, with a mix of classroom and outdoor exercises, and topics include leadership styles, trip planning, trip management and safety. The program emphasizes experiential learning and decision making skills. Open to all AMC members with preference given to active AMC trip participants. The program is held in Mattapan, MA on Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The fee is $15.00. Spring Hike to Mt. Garfield

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat May 12, 2018

This spring hike to Mt. Garfield (4,500') offers wonderful views of the surrounding Pemigewasset Wilderness on a clear day. The hike entails approximately 12.4 miles (which includes a short road walk) and approximately 3,000 feet of elevation gain. Mt. Lafayette, Mt. Liberty, the Bonds and Owl's Head and several other four thousand footers can be seen from its summit. This is a shoulder-season hike, so hikers should expect varied conditions, include the possibility of winter-like conditions, particularly at the higher elevations. Prior winter hiking experience is strongly suggested. Given the variety of shoulder season conditions, participants should expect a mix of mud, water, snow, and ice, with widely ranging temperatures between the lower and higher elevations so be prepared to bring winter gear. We will monitor the weather and trail conditions and make decisions as to what is needed closer to the date of the hike. Shoulder season tends to include icy conditions due to melting and refreezing cycles, so hiking poles are recommended.

Spy Pond Trails Day Invasive Plant Removal

Conservation Date: Sat May 12, 2018

Spy Pond Trails Day is an all-volunteer work event sponsored by the Town of Arlington, with ample support provided by the AMC Boston Chapter Trail Committee volunteer crews and the AMC Professional Trail Crew since the first annual event in 2005. This year the AMC Boston Chapter Conservation Committee will be joining the Spy Pond Trails Day activities and in conjunction with other local groups we will help remove invasive plants and carefully maintain vistas from the access path onto the pond, for aesthetic enjoyment and to promote public safety. Doughnuts, snacks and tools will be provided. This year we will focus on bittersweet, a particularly aggressive invasive, and we could use all the help we can get with keeping it in check. We have two root pullers (which the kids love to use!), as well as loppers and shears, and we encourage anyone else who wants to help to bring their own tools to add to the cause. Bring a brown-bag a lunch for after the work session, and enjoy a relaxing lunch and conversation on the pond. Learn about #SaveLWCF.

The Birds Are Back Family Walk, Lancaster Town Forest, Lancaster, MA (BHP Level 1)

Family Date: Sat May 12, 2018

Audubon Certified Birder and North County Land Trust Board Member Clay Hobart shares the wonders of spring birds. This is an early morning walk from 7 - 9 am. We will take our time enjoying the birds and walking perhaps a mile or two at most. In particular, Clay will share what he sees for birds 16 - 17 months post harvest compared to pre-harvest in the Lancaster Town Forest. Tim Castner, Chair Lancaster Town Forest, will be there as well. This will be fascinating. Lancaster had a carefully planned harvest in the town forest ..... designed to improve the health of the trees and wildlife in the area. Let's see what has happened since.

Please be sure to dress for the weather. Early April early morning can be cool. Suggest layers! Suggest boots as well. Sneakers may get wet and be uncomfortable. Snacks for the kids and water always a good thing.

This walk is part of Hidden Treasures, a program in partnership with Freedom's Way National Heritage Area.
