Early August Hike to Zealand and Hale

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat August 4, 2018

Join us in early August to bag two 4,000 footers along with views of the cascading Zealand Falls and the ever impressive Zealand Notch. During our 13-mile loop hike, we'll summit Zealand Mountain (4,260') and Mt. Hale (4,054') with a brief stop at Zealand Falls Hut along the way. While neither summit is famous for its views, from Zeacliff Outlook we'll feast our eyes on one of the finest views in the White Mountains with its magnificent panorama over the eastern Pemigewasset Wilderness and several mountain ranges. Plan for a long but convivial day, and pack full three-season gear. We will be spotting cars to avoid an end-of-day road walk.

Mt. Whiteface and Mt. Passaconaway Loop Hike

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat August 4, 2018

Let's enjoy the Sandwich Range with a challenging clockwise loop hike deep in the White Mountains to two wooded summits but with ledges and various viewpoints along the route that make this hike well worth the effort. This is a moderately paced hike to the summits of Mt. Whiteface and Mt. Passaconaway. We will be hiking a classic loop across BOTH 4000 footers. The loop distance is about 11.5 miles with 4350' of elevation gain. Expect a long day, this hike will take about 8-9 hours to complete, if not longer. This is a great hike for those that are working on their 4,000 footer list. We will start early for this hike so that we have full use of day light. The traditional loop comprises the following trails: Blueberry Ledge Trail, Rollins Trail, Dicey's Mill Trail, Walden Trail and Wonalancet Trail. This trip is for individuals who have been out a few times this year and have recent experience with similar distance hikes in the Whites.

Moriah is one of the NH48 4000 footers and Shelburne-Moriah is #5 on the 52 With a View! This 15 mile trek will be undertaken over a period of approximately 10 or so hours of hiking, accumulating more than 4000 feet of elevation gain and loss. This is not a beginner hike :-)

Couch-to-4k Young Members (20s & 30s) (June 17 - August 26)

Young Members Date: Sun August 5, 2018

Couch to 4k is a series of hikes intended to introduce participants to the basic skills and knowledge required for safe and fun outdoor experiences. Hikes are organized into three levels of difficulty, starting with local walks with little elevation gain and culminating in treks up four-thousand-footers of New Hampshire.

Couch to 4k trip leaders will highlight important skills for safe hiking such navigation, hydration, nutrition, and proper attire. Most Couch to 4k events are on the weekends, but look out for weekday night local hikes as well.

Sign up for as many (or as few) hikes as you would like, building from Level 1 hikes all the way to Level 3, or as far along as you would like to go.

Be sure to review trip descriptions to see which hikes are right for you. Here's a rough guide to how the Couch to 4K hikes are leveled:

Level 1 hikes include little to no elevation gain, and move at a moderate pace. These hikes are great opportunities to get to know your leaders and fellow participants and to review some basic skills for hiking.

Level 2 hikes are on the longer side, around 5 miles, and include some elevation gain with rock scrambling and ledges. At this level and above all participants are expected to have appropriate footwear, clothing, water, and other essential gear.

Level 3 hikes are 4ks! These hikes include some of the shorter 4ks with lower elevation gain. Expect rock scrambling, ledges, and stream crossings.

The intended audience of the Couch to 4k program is young members (YM - hikers in their 20s and 30s), but all are welcome.

Fast-paced, Show & Go Conditioning Hike Series in Middlesex Fells

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Thu August 9, 2018

They're back! Join the leaders for a fast (aggressively paced) hike in Middlesex Fells. Need to break in some new boots or other gear? Been a while since you had a pack on your back? Meet at the eastern edge of the Cross Fells Trail (Gate 58) by 5:55PM to start hiking promptly at 6PM. We'll hike variations of the Rock Circuit and surrounding trails in the eastern section of the Fells. We'll hike until dark (bring a headlamp) at a moderate to fast pace to get our heart rates up. Never explored the eastern part of the Fells? It boasts a waterfall (yes a waterfall in the Fells), nice up-and-down rock scrambles, fantastic views of Boston, and the remains of the 1899 MIT Geodetic Observatory. It's a hidden gem with variable terrain accessible by public transit. Sorry no dogs or children allowed on this hike. This is a show & go hike that does not require registration. That said, help us manage hike size expectations and register for the hike if you can. For those that register, we'll send out a reminder email the day before the hike. You will be asked to sign an AMC Waiver at the start of the hike. You can preview the waiver at: https://www.outdoors.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Volunteer-Led-Activi... Gear: At a minimum, bring a pack that can fit an extra layer (it'll get chillier as the sun sets), headlamp (required as we'll be chasing the sun out of the Fells), hiking boots, water and snacks. We'll hike rain or shine (thunderstorms = cancel), so don't forget your rain gear. Better to test your rain gear locally than wait for a storm in the Whites. You may choose to carry a larger/heavier pack with your full gear for a spring/summer hike for a more rigorous workout. Packs can easily be made heavier with extra water. Here's the recommended Spring day hike gear list: https://www.outdoors.org/trip-ideas-tips-resources/gear-advice/three-sea...

Hostel and Hiking Weekend: Baldfaces and Waumbek

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Fri August 10, 2018 - Sun August 12, 2018

Join us for two days of summer hiking and two nights in a comfortable hostel outside Gorham, NH. Saturday, we'll hike the Baldface Circle Trail, which the White Mountain Guide calls the "one of the most attractive trips in the White Mountains." Traveling clockwise, we'll ascend steep ledges en route to South Baldface, cross about 4 miles of open and exposed terrain including the summit of North Baldface and then complete our loop via the Bicknell Ridge Trail. We'll visit scenic Emerald Pool on our return. Sunday, we'll hike Mt. Waumbek, a NH 4000'er. We'll enjoy a group dinner on Saturday night.

The Baldface loop is about 10 miles with 3600' elevation gain and significant rock scrambles. Participants should be fit and experienced hikers who are comfortable with ledges and scrambling and should describe this experience when registering. Mt. Waumbek is a 7.2 mile round trip with 2650' elevation gain. Poor weather will alter our itinerary.
