XC Ski Out the Door at Craftsbury VT (Intermediate)

Intro Date: Fri March 1, 2019 - Sun March 3, 2019

Up to 85K of groomed XC ski trails. Optional snowshoeing, ice-skating, and apres-ski sauna, all in good company of intermediate skiers. Approximately $235.00 (depending on group size, there is usually a refund) includes three days of trail passes, two nights lodging, linens, and six sumptuous, healthy meals (Friday/Saturday dinner, Saturday/Sunday breakfast and lunch, and a potluck social hour on Saturday. Cross Country Ski Weekend at Craftsbury

Craftsbury has the largest XC ski network in New England along with hiking trails on site, a gym, yoga classes, and more. The registration fee includes 2 nights lodging. This trip is generally geared toward at least intermediate level XC skiers, however inquire with the leaders if you are a beginner.

Notch Your Ordinary Winter Hiking Weekend

Young Members Date: Fri March 8, 2019 - Sun March 10, 2019

Do you like hiking? Do you like hanging out with friends by a fireplace, drinking hot cocoa, eating good food? Then this is the weekend hiking trip for you!

We will be offering hiking at various levels both Saturday and Sunday. If you have winter appropriate hiking gear you are welcomed to join us (options to rent snowshoes/ winter hiking boots).

We have rented out the entire Notch Hostel which includes a common room, little library (with information about the area, games, and books about hikes and hiking), dining room, bed with clean bedding in the shared bunk room, full kitchen, plus shower rooms and toilets. Delicious meals will be provided and are served family style in a warm, social atmosphere.

No car? no worries - leaders will help organize carpools. Anyone young at heart is welcomed and encouraged to join us on this trip.

Family Ski Weekend at Pinestead Farm Lodge in Franconia, NH

Family Date: Fri March 8, 2019 - Sun March 10, 2019

Family ski weekend based at the comfortable but rustic Pinestead Farm Lodge in Franconia, NH, a Family Outings Favorite. We have several simple "suites" of rooms with shared bath and kitchen facilities. Breakfast and dinner are group events at the lodge. Lunch materials are provided. Pinestead is 10 minutes from Cannon Mountain and 5 minutes from the XC ski trails at the Franconia Inn. Bretton Woods Alpine and XC areas are about 45 minutes away. There's a sledding hill right behind the lodge (may need some "engineering") and another one at the nearby Franconia Inn where ice skating (for a fee) may also be possible. Group hikes to Bridal Veil Falls or Flume Gorge sometimes happen. The farm has chickens and cows and a small play structure. Suitable for kids all ages and skill levels. $110/adult; $100/kid (ages 3-7); children under 3 free on air mattress or in a crib.

Winter day hike to Mt Cabot and possibly The Bulge and The Horn

Boston Rock Climbing Pro

Mountaineering Date: Tue March 12, 2019 - Sun May 12, 2019

Rock climbing provides the exhilaration of conquering a crag, but also the puzzle of figuring out a sequence of moves to climb a difficult section. You can experience the rewards and challenges of rock climbing by taking the Boston Mountaineering Committee's Rock Climbing Program! This program covers the basic skills for outdoor rock climbing. The emphasis of the course is learning to safely follow a leader on multipitch trad climbs. We cover: toprope anchor building, belaying, ascending, rappelling, and more. No prior experience is necessary. You will learn from our experienced volunteer instructors and meet other aspiring and enthusiastic rock climbers! The program will have two indoor sessions: an optional information session on March 12 (tentative) from 7-8pm, and a required Knots night on March 26 (tentative) from 7-9pm. The program weekends are held in the Blue Hills reservation. The first program weekend is April 6 and 7 (both days required); you may attend either day of the remaining program weekends: April 13/14, April 27/28, and May 4/5. If you do not have a climbing harness or helmet (required), they may be borrowed at no cost (with a deposit). Registration is by application, due by the Sunday after the optional information session. AMC Advanced Skills Workshop (AWS)

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Fri March 15, 2019 - Sun March 17, 2019

The AMC Advanced Skills Workshop (AWS) is designed to introduce experienced winter hikers and climbers to the basic skills required for climbing high altitude mountains such as Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, and beyond. The AWS topics will include roped team travel on a moderate to high angle snow slopes and glaciers, ice axe use and self-arrest, advanced belay systems, crevasse rescue, snow anchors, and high-altitude medical issues and medications. The workshop base camp and lectures will be out of Harvard Cabin, and our daily outdoor adventures will take place near Pinkham Lodge/ Joe Dodge Lodge along the Sherburne Ski Trail or lower slopes of Tuckerman's Ravine depending on the snow conditions at the time of the workshop. Full Winter Gear is required and a comprehensive gear list will be provided to all accepted participants; however, please note that you must have 4-season above treeline experience, double boots or Leader accepted single-layer mountaineering boots, ice axe, crampons, carabiners, helmet and harness. Leaders will provide all ropes, specialized pulleys and snow anchors. In addition, please note that you will need to come to class prepared with (1) Texas Sling and (2) prussiks. Assembling them will be described in detail in your mandatory pre-class readings in Freedom of the Hills or Selters, Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue. Moderate pace 5 mile walk, across grassy meadows and through hemlock forest, to scenic Walden Pond. Visit a cove, once inhabited by Henry Thoreau. Enjoy sit-down break, on the shore of Walden. Walk followed by dinner/social hour at China Ruby Restaurant, in nearby Maynard, at around 2:00pm. Meet 11:00am, at Lincoln Train Station commuter parking lot. From Route 2, take Route 126 South for 2 miles. Turn left on Codman Road, follow to end. Turn left, see Train Station on left.

Winter Harvard Cabin day trip weekend

We'll be doing winter day hikes out of this rustic cabin off Route 16 south of Pinkham Notch. Based on group and leader interest, we'll do an Intermediate-ish hike or hikes on Saturday and something likely on the way home on Sunday. The calendar says it will be Spring but it will still be winter. Great time to winter hike with lengthening days. Full winter gear (proper clothing, winter boots, traction and snowshoes) is required.
