Family Feb. Vacation 3-Day Getaway, Noble View, Russell, MA

Family Date: Thu February 22, 2018 - Sun February 25, 2018

Enjoy winter hiking, snow shoeing & sledding, then warm up next to the wood burning stove with home cooked meals, friendly smiles and other families enjoying snacks, games or crafts. If you have x-c ski's...bring them! Typically, others do, too!

Noble View is known for well marked trails & beautiful vistas overlooking the Pioneer Valley. The trails are easy for families of all ages whether hiking, on shoe shoes or x-c skis. Families with kids of all ages are welcome! We have snow shoes you can borrow (let us know) and/or you may bring your own outdoor equipment and indoor games to play/share with others. Russell Pond may be frozen enough for ice skating, too! We'll have to see... "Snow much to do!!!"...

The Double Cottage at Noble View is rustic and cozy warm with the wood burning stove, but with no running water (that's at the Bath House!). Everyone gets to share the responsibilities for meal prep in the well-stocked kitchen, and clean-up. The Bath House is a short walk away and features running hot & cold water, hot showers and eco-friendly, flush toilets.

Sleeping accommodations are co-ed to try to keep families together in private rooms (no promises). Bed numbers vary per room, so bring along an air mattress for the kids to use on the floor. Don't forget your sleeping bags and pillows! Bedding is not supplied.

If you like downhill skiing, there are a few areas close by you may want to explore on your own. (Lift tickets & equipment not included in fee).

$125/pp covers meals: 2 dinners (possibly 3 depending upon your arrival time) 3 breakfasts, lunch fixings and snacks throughout the day; lodging; use of Noble Views trails and facilities.

Pemi Range Snowshoe

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat February 24, 2018

This trip goes off the beaten track! Snowshoe through a beautiful winter landscape breaking our own trail and possibly visiting two peaks in the Pemigewasset Range on the way.

We'll drop transportation at the Hancock Notch trailhead off the Kancamagus Highway, and then begin on the Sawyer River Trail. We will break trail 8 miles over rolling terrain (with stream crossings) to the Hancock Notch Trail, and return to our cars. On the way, we may attempt a visit to a talus field south of the trail, and perhaps summit two of Mt. Huntington's peaks (3770'), both on the NH "hundred highest" list, and off-trail! Minimum total distance: 10 miles over mostly rolling, occasionally steep, terrain. Possible addition of several more miles and 1200 feet of gain. An alternate route may be substituted depending on weather or trail conditions. This trip will require excellent physical endurance. WHP participants with winter day-hiking gear and prior snowshoeing experience are welcome.

Gear: Below tree-line winter day-hiking gear. See:

http://hbbostonamc.org/docs/Gear_lists/Winter_Dayhike_equip.pdf

Gear notes:

Bring insulated winter hiking boots that you have tested with your snowshoes. Prefer high-float snowshoes or ones with add-on tails for deep snow. If using poles, remember your snow baskets!

Bring ski googles or other eye protection in case we go off-trail. A tree branch in the eye is no fun.
