Family Outings Committee Meeting and Trip Planning, Newton, MA

Family Date: Tue September 25, 2018

Join Family Outings Tuesday evening September 25th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the Auburndale Library in Newton for our Family Outings Committee and Trip Planning Meeting. Light refreshments. Public meeting open to all. Great opportunity to get to know the group and see how volunteer-led AMC Family Outings are governed and trips are planned. The Boston Chapter's Family Outings Committee meets four times per year to discuss and plan. We have roughly 75+ active volunteers.

6:30 to 7:30 pm we discuss committee business and larger training and events coming up. This is followed by a general trip planning meeting. Bring your ideas to brainstorm. Teens welcome to join. Younger kids welcome but they will need to be able to entertain themselves quietly. Our meeting and trip planning agenda is more for adults.

Map and Compass Instructional Weekend

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat September 29, 2018 - Sun September 30, 2018

Weekend Map and Compass course held at the Harvard Outing Club Cabin in Pinkham Notch. If you've always wanted to truly learn how to use a compass, this is the course for you. We'll cover maps, compass, navigation and intentional bushwhacking, and will then apply these skills to hike two actual trail-less mountains. The second (Sunday) hike is optional and entails a full day of bushwhacking - possibly finishing as late as 7:00 pm on Sunday evening. Participation is strongly encouraged because you'll get to apply the skills you've learned. Registration for the course will close on Tuesday, September 25.

Mount Garfield in a day

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat September 29, 2018

Come along for a fall day hike to Mount Garfield (4,500 ft; NH48)! This 10-mile trip offers amazing panoramic views of the surrounding Franconia Ridge and Franconia and Lincoln Brooks valleys. Starting on the Garfield Trail, we will ascend gradually 4.8 miles to the Garfield Ridge Trail for the final 0.2-mile steep and rocky pitch to the summit. After taking in the scenery, we will descend via the same trails. The elevation gain for this hike is approximately 3,000 ft. Participants should have reliable boots, 3-season gear and recent experience with hikes of similar length and elevation gain.

Family Columbus Day Fall Foliage Weekend at AMC Noble View Outdoor Center, Russell, MA

Join Family Outings Columbus Day Fall Foliage Weekend at AMC's Noble View Outdoor Center < 2-hrs West of Boston! Noble View is a great place to hike easier trails, and take in the picturesque beauty of the Pioneer Valley. Possible options as well for more challenging hikes "off campus" on local trails. $100 adults; $80 kids for 2 nights bunk accommodations and meals OR tenting options available for $55/adult; $45/child!

North Cottage offers twin bed accommodations in varying room configurations to accommodate family style sleeping arrangements. Some kids may be on air mattresses and sleeping bags on the floor. Running water, toilets, and hot showers are available at the Bath House a short walk away. We prep and cook meals together in North Cottage kitchen with stove, oven, and refrigerator but no microwave or freezer. Meal prep and clean-up is communal.

Columbus Day Weekend AMC Cardigan High Cabin Overnight, Alexandria, NH

Enjoy fall hiking at its best with a small group of AMC Boston Families for this Columbus Day Weekend overnight at Cardigan High Cabin, a two mile hike (1450' elevation gain) from Cardigan Lodge and under half mile from the summit of Mt. Cardigan (3155'). High Cabin was built in 1931 and renovated in 2004 with new bunk beds, roof, woodstove and Clivus composting toilet. Trip best for kids 6 years and older. Canceled: Columbus Day Weekend Family AMC Carter Notch Hut Overnight, White Mountains, NH

Join us Columbus Day weekend on a trip to AMC Carter Notch Hut (self service). Fall folliage views of Mt Washington & northern Presidentials and Wildcat mountains, & hike two 4,000 footers.

Meet Sunday morning at the Nineteen Mile Brook trailhead to shuttle cars back to Pinkham Notch for use next day. We hike 4.2 miles, elevation 2,050', to Carter Notch Hut, carrying our own food to cook. Leaders will provide meals. Leave space in your packs. Monday we hike over Wildcat Range 5.4 miles, elevation 1,650', including Wildcat A peak (4,422ft) & Wildcat D peak (4,050ft).
This brings us back to our pre-spotted cars.

Calumet Family Fall Hiking Weekend in Ossipee, NH

Family Date: Fri October 12, 2018 - Sun October 14, 2018

Join AMC Family Outings for a fun, active and relaxing Fall Weekend roughly 2 ½ hours north of Boston at Calumet lodge & cabins. On the edge of Lake Ossipee, Calumet offers a nice base to explore the White Mountains. We will do 2 hikes, each approximately 3+ miles with ~900-1000 feet of elevation gain/loss. Kids must be able to hike on their own or be carried. This weekend includes accommodations, all meals, activities, & down time for kids & adults. Campfire on the beach with s'mores Saturday night, weather permitting.

Accommodations are rustic comfortable. The lodge has a lounge, kitchen, bathrooms with showers on the first floor which is where the group shares our meals and down time. The 2nd floor sleeps up to 22 (three bedrooms for 2, 8, and 12) in bunk-style firm beds. The sleeping areas are co-ed, so families can stay together. Bring your sleeping bags or sheets and blankets, pillow and towels. The cabins are insulated and heated and sleep up to ten (four bunk beds and two single beds). Those staying in the cabins have their choice of the bathrooms in the lodge or separate heated bathrooms. Meals are simple, hearty, and delicious. Everyone helps cook, prep and clean-up.

$115 for adults in the Retreat lodge or $95 in cabins. Kids 7 - 21 years enjoy a reduced "kid" rate of $85. Kids six and under enjoy a reduced "kid" rate of $45 including all meals Friday evening to Sunday lunch.

Fall Cycling Weekend in the Berkshires

Hike North Pack Monadnock, Greenfield, NH

A rugged, scenic loop of 6.5mi. via Ted's & Carolyn's trails. 9:30am-2:30pm. From Nashua, NH, take Rte. 101A west toward Milford, NH. Blend onto Rte. 101 west toward Wilton, NH. Head north toward Lyndeboro on Rte. 31 and turn left ~8mi. on Russell Station Rd. (look for the Trebuchet Adventure Park on the right and Trojan Horse on the left by this intersection). Continue to Mountain Rd. and turn right ~0.5mi. to parking in a small alcove on the right opposite trailhead. Storm cancels. No dogs, non-AMC members $1.
