AMC Ski Committee Show and Go Sunday XC ski series

Skiing Date: Sun March 4, 2018

Meet at the Waterville Valley touring center at 10 am for a few hours of moderate paced, machine cut track kick and glide skiing.

Novice to advanced skiers welcome, we will ski a few hours, return to the lodge for lunch, then ski a few hours in the afternoon. Group will likely break into a faster and more moderate paced group; extremely fast (and skaters) or slower skiers are welcome to self-guide.

These are show and go trips on machine groomed and patrolled Nordic centers, no need to pre-register. Participants should self-pay for the center trail fee. We recommend beginners take a group lesson before attending one of these trips. All trips ski off at 10 am sharp, arrive in time to get your skis waxed and gear together; look for leaders in the ski center/lodge. Trips may go in marginal conditions, but lack of snow and/or rain will likely cancel the trip. Consult leader with questions.

This trip is sponsored by the AMC Boston Ski Committee. You will be asked to sign an AMC Waiver at the start of the trip. The waiver that can be viewed at: http://www.outdoors.org/pdf/upload/volreleaseDoubleSided.pdf#search=release

Mt. Moosilauke Winter Day Hike

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat March 10, 2018

Join us for a winter hike up Mt. Moosilauke, with its stunning views of the White Mountains ranges and southern valleys. This out-and-back hike will take us about 8 miles (rt) on the Glencliff Trail (AT), over the open summit of South Peak and continuing to the main summit at 4,802'. The summit is above-treeline and very exposed, so appropriate above-treeline gear is required. We'll hike at a steady pace climbing approximately 3,300' of elevation. We expect this hike will take between 6-8 hours with breaks, weather permitting of course. If we get a bluebird day, this will be a beautiful hike up a New England Classic.
This trip is only suitable for fit and experienced winter hikers who have above treeline experience and have hiked a few times with similar mileage/elevation in the months preceding the trip. You'll need full winter gear including insulated boots, crampons, snowshoes and full face protection. Ice axes are recommended. Please describe your experience and gear when registering. We will ski gently uphill for 4.1 miles to the Zealand trail. From there, we will continue along terrain that is mostly flat with minor ups and downs, gaining a total elevation of 450 ft. along 2.5 miles to the Twinway trail junction. The hut is reached with a short but moderately steep .2 miles gaining another 200 ft, which we will likely do on foot.
