Family Memorial Day Weekend Backpack to AMC Galehead Hut (3,800 feet) & Zealand Falls Hut (2,700 feet), both still self service. Hike three 4,000 footers in spring.

Visit two AMC favorites. Galehead Hut is the most remote of the AMC High Huts with glorious views of the Pemigawasset Wilderness Area. Zealand Falls Hut is spectacularly situated on the side of Zealand Valley near Zealand Falls at the northern end of the Pemigewasset wilderness.

Meet Saturday morning 10 am at the Gale River Trailhead to shuttle cars to our endpoint, the Zealand Trail trailhead. We will hike to the hut on The Gale River Trail (4.6 mi. 2200 ft, elevation gain 3 hrs 25 min.). After arriving at the hut we can hike up to the summit of South Twin Mtn. elev. 4,902 ft.(0.8 mi., 1,150ft.,1 hr.) &/or to Galehead Mtn summit elev. 4,024 ft.(0.5 mi., 250 ft., 25 min.). We will carry & cook our own food and prepare a group dinner & breakfast at the hut.

Sunday we hike The Twinway from Galehead Hut to Zealand Falls Hut (7 miles, 1,750 elevation gain, 4.25 hours). After the steep climb to the summit of South Twin Mtn. elev. 4,902 ft.(0.8 mi., 1,150ft.,1 hr.) the trail goes mostly downhill, with a minimal climb up to the summit of Guyot (4,580 feet), and a short but steep climb up to Zealand Mountain (4,265 feet). There are 360° views from the summits of South Twin and Guyot. Peakbaggers will get both South Twin and Zealand Mountain.

Monday, we hike out the Zealand Trail 2.8 miles with 650 feet elevation loss to our cars.

This trip is not for beginners as the trails are moderate to strenuous (ages 8+)! Cost/person lodging, 2 dinners, and breakfast (you bring snacks & lunch) $150 members; $170 non-members. Registrar Jeanne Blauner, jablauner@comcast.net, 978-202-5606.
