Flume and Liberty Foliage Hike.

Young Members Date: Sat October 20, 2018

Join AMC Young Members for a fall foliage hike over some of the most scenic mountains in the Whites: Mt Flume and Mt Liberty! This 9.8 mile hike ascends the scrambly Flume slide trail and descends the gentle Liberty Springs trail, for a total elevation gain of 3,677 feet. For those of you who are peak-bagging, the summits of Mt. Flume & Mt. Liberty are both over 4,000 ft. The trail features multiple water crossings and some advanced scrambling. The Flume Slide trail is on the Terrifying 25 list and is not for those with a fear of heights or exposure, so we are requiring some scrambling experience for this hike. We will be hiking at a moderate to fast pace. Highlights of the hike include sweeping open views from the Flume Slide, and incredible panoramic views of the Whites from the summits of both mountains. You won't regret it!

Garfield Ridge Trail Fall Adventure

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat October 20, 2018

Join us for a fall hike along the northern edge of the Pemi Loop. We'll hike in and out through the Gale River and Garfield Trails joined by the Garfield Ridge Trail, with a short road walk back to our cars - for about thirteen miles and 3200 feet in elevation gain. Along the way, we will summit both Garfield and Galehead and hopefully get a little time to enjoy the view from the porch of the Galehead Hut. Will there be foliage left? Snow? Maybe both - join us and see. Either way, you will have a chance to enjoy a section of the Pemi Loop that generally has fewer hikers than some other sections and, if we are lucky, experience some awesome views and fall weather in the Whites. You should have clothing and equipment for a late fall hike, perhaps including microspikes. A more certain weather forecast by Friday will help us to make the call on exact requirements. Expect a steady moderate to fast pace.

AMC YM: Volunteer with harvest at Drumlin Farm

Young Members Date: Sat October 20, 2018

Join Boston's AMC young members to volunteer at a Mass Audubon site and organic farm in Lincoln! We will help with chores from 1:30 to 4:00 and can also explore their wildlife sanctuary afterwards. During our trips last year we weeded the carrot patch, planted broccoli, and picked potatoes and green beans. We accomplished a lot and had a great time!

Gear: Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty. Bring garden gloves if you have them. We will supply loaner gloves. Leave your purse locked in your car trunk. It will only get dirty in the fields. Bring a water bottle - a must have! When you arrive, check-in at the admissions window.

Transportation: Public transportation is limited to the commuter rail (Lincoln station) so please get in touch with each other for carpooling using the sign-up list in the link.

Description from Drumlin Farm volunteer manager:
Our farmers grow fifty different types of fruits and vegetables on 17 beautiful acres of Boyce Field - everything from kohlrabi to bok choy. This is local agriculture at its best. Our farmers employ sustainable farming techniques including crop rotation, winter cover crops, and creative pest control, along with a major focus on soil amendments. No chemical fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides are used. Our produce is sold through our CSA, to downtown restaurants, at the Union Square farmers' market, and at our own farm stand.

Volunteers will learn about our growing techniques as they help our farmers with classic field chores such as thinning, weeding, and harvesting. When chores are done you are welcome to visit the farmyard with the livestock animals or to walk our trails. You can see the same wonderful view from the top of our drumlin that Henry David Thoreau once wrote about in his journal. At 285 feet it is the highest point around.

Family Halloween AMC Carter Notch Hut Overnight, White Mountains, NH

Family Date: Sat October 27, 2018 - Sun October 28, 2018

The AMC's Carter Notch Hut, known to be haunted, is the perfect destination for this family Halloween Saturday night overnight (more on that later). We backpack in 3.8 miles with 2,050' elevation gain along the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail arriving at the hut with a small lake and surrounded by the towering cliffs of Wildcat and Carter Dome on either side.

Carter Notch Hut, built in 1914, has a main lodge with two detached bunk houses. Carter Notch is known to be haunted with "Red Mac" McGregor, the friendly ghost of Red Mac McGregor who used to be caretaker at Carter. Here a link to the story (more on the web too): http://www.wmur.com/article/thought-to-be-haunted-carter-notch-hut-turns- 100-this-year/5193505)

This is a great way to celebrate Halloween and introduce your kids to backpacking without the added work of bringing a tent. We hike into the Hut at an easy pace, stopping to explore and take pictures of the landscape. There are lots of boulders to climb too! After settling in those who wish to hike more can do part of the Carter Dome trail, or hike up some of the switchbacks going up to Wildcat. Otherwise you and your family can relax with a book, play games, or go swimming in the lake (brrrr) weather permitting. We will prepare a group dinner together, then more games and storytelling at night. Sunday, after a pancake breakfast, we hike back to our cars.

You and your children must be able to hike 3.8 miles along rocky terrain with moderate elevation gain of 2,050 ft (some steeper sections) carrying your personal gear, sleeping bags and some group food. Cost $75/member ($85 non-members) includes lodging at Carter Notch Hut Saturday night, one dinner and one breakfast. Participants are responsible for their own snacks and lunches. To register click the "Register Now" button above or copy and paste this URL into your browser: https://regi.amcboston.org/event/1903.
