Mt Washington via Huntington Ravine

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat September 22, 2018

We will attempt the Huntington Ravine Trail to ascend Mt Washington. However, please read the trip description carefully. Once we are on the headwall, there is no turning back. The headwall starts with approximately 50 - 100 feet of slab with few handholds. It gives you some exposure; so, this portion of the hike is not for the faint-hearted. The rest of the headwall requires a lot of scrambling and pulling yourself up. Although strenuous, the reward is the beauty of the ravine and the cliffs along the way up. We will then assess the time, the weather and the group level before proceeding to the summit of Mt Washington. The return trail will be Tuckerman Ravine. Rain the day before will likely change the route to the more traditional route of Lions Head, which also has a steep portion. Rain on the day of the hike will cancel. Shoes with good traction such as Vibram is a must. Also, if you use poles, they must be able to be stowed onto your pack. We will be screening carefully and will be looking for hikers with recent above treeline experience and good cheer.

Baldface Loop: One of the most magnificent hikes in the Whites

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat September 22, 2018

Located in Evan's Notch, the Baldface Loop is one of the best hikes New Hampshire has to offer. The hike will take us over 4 miles of open and semi-open ledges providing long stretches of unobstructed views (and equal great exposure to storms). We'll summit South Baldface and North Baldface peak clockwise, hiking up South Baldface first. This means we will hike the steepest section on the way up rather than on the way down. Expect to see great views of the taller White Mountain peaks. From the ridge, you can see the Carter Ridge and the Wild River Wilderness. The trail has several stream crossings and there is rock scrambling not for the faint of heart. A possible bonus is that we may find blueberries which are usually out in early August. We will also visit Emerald Pool on the way down for a cold swim. Super cold! This hike is classified as difficult due to distance and terrain.

Family AMC Carter Notch Hut Fall Overnight, White Mountains, NH

Family Date: Sat September 22, 2018 - Sun September 23, 2018

The AMC's Carter Notch Hut is the destination for this family adventure weekend. The Hut sits at the end of a moderate 3.8 mile hike in along the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. It is surrounded by the towering cliffs of Wildcat and Carter Dome on either side, and there is a small lake just below the Hut. The Carter Notch Hut, which was built in 1914, has a main lodge with two detached bunk houses. Hiking there is a great way to introduce your kids to backpacking without the added work of bringing along a tent. We will hike into the Hut at an easy pace, stopping along the way to explore and take pictures of the landscape. There are lots of boulders to climb too! After settling in those who wish to hike more can do part of the Carter Dome trail, or hike up some of the switchbacks going up to Wildcat. Otherwise you and your family can relax with a book, play games, or go swimming in the lake if the weather permits. We will enjoy a group dinner, prepared by participants and leaders, and then more games and storytelling at night. Sunday, after a pancake breakfast, we will hike back to our cars. You and your children must be able to hike 3.8 miles along rocky terrain with your own personal gear, sleeping bags and group food. The elevation is gain is moderate - 2,050ft over 3.8 miles, with some steeper sections.

Cost is $75/members and $85 non-members and includes lodging at Carter Notch Hut Saturday night, one dinner and one breakfast. Participants are responsible for their own snacks and lunches.
