Baldface Loop

Hiking/Backpacking Date: Sat August 18, 2018

Join the AMC for a hike described by the White Mountain Guide as "one of the most attractive trips in the White Mountains." This 9.6 mile loop is strenuous with climbs on open ledges, but with a big view pay-off as we cross the ridge between the South and North peaks of Baldface Mountain. Extra added fun for the strong at heart: a swim at Emerald Pool at the end of the day! This is a difficult hike requiring steep scrambles and challenging descents. This is not a hike for beginners and recent experience on difficult White Mountain treks and comfort on exposed terrain required to participate. Due to steep and slippery ledges on this route, rain on hike day or a soaking rain 24 hours prior to hike day will cancel.

Couch-to-4k (June - August)

Young Members Date: Sun August 19, 2018

Couch to 4k is a series of hikes intended to introduce participants to the basic skills and knowledge required for safe and fun outdoor experiences. Hikes are organized into three levels of difficulty, starting with local walks with little elevation gain and culminating in treks up four-thousand-footers of New Hampshire.

Couch to 4k trip leaders will highlight important skills for safe hiking such navigation, hydration, nutrition, and proper attire. Most Couch to 4k events are on the weekends, but look out for weekday night local hikes as well.

Sign up for as many (or as few) hikes as you would like, building from Level 1 hikes all the way to Level 3, or as far along as you would like to go.

Be sure to review trip descriptions to see which hikes are right for you. Here's a rough guide to how the Couch to 4K hikes are leveled:

Level 1 hikes include little to no elevation gain, and move at a moderate pace. These hikes are great opportunities to get to know your leaders and fellow participants and to review some basic skills for hiking.

Level 2 hikes are on the longer side, around 5 miles, and include some elevation gain with rock scrambling and ledges. At this level and above all participants are expected to have appropriate footwear, clothing, water, and other essential gear.

Level 3 hikes are 4ks! These hikes include some of the shorter 4ks with lower elevation gain. Expect rock scrambling, ledges, and stream crossings.

The intended audience of the Couch to 4k program is young members (YM - hikers in their 20s and 30s), but all are welcome.

Cycle the City: Boston Harbor, Charles & Neponset Rivers and the Emerald Necklace

Bicycling Date: Sun August 19, 2018

This trip is for any bicyclists who want to experience a ride that links together Boston's many bike paths and lanes into a loop around the city, and enjoy the many sights and points of interest. The ride will start at South Station, passing down the Greenway to Atlantic Avenue, and onto the USS Constitution. The ride loops back along the Charles River, then through the Fenway and Emerald Necklace to Jamaica Pond. It continues through the Arnold Arboretum to a lunch break in Jamaica Plain, then traverses back through a slice of Franklin Park before joining the bike path along the Neponset River to Boston Harbor. The ride completes its journey along Boston Harbor near UMass Boston to Castle Island, then back to South Station.

The ride loops around the city for about 35 miles using primarily dedicated bike paths and bike lanes, with a few road connections between entry points. We'll go at a more relaxed pace since most of the ride traverses Boston's bike path network, with stops to cross streets at various crosswalks. We'll plan to make stops along the way at various points of interest for photo opportunities and sightseeing. We'll also plan to stop for lunch at the midpoint in Jamaica Plain.
